In Garfagnana, the brewery La Petrognola, heir of a dream

The Garfagnana territory boasts a beautiful territory, by its nature, its landscapes and especially its fruit. La Petrognola beers, in fact, were born from love for this land in the heart of Tuscany. Symbol of this is spelled, cultivated for thousands of years in the Mediterranean basin and the father of all wheat are now known. This, in particular, has been recognized IGP Europe and is one among the most appreciated of the place.
With the emergence of wheat, pearl barley has undergone a period of crisis, but not in this corner of Lucchesia, where he always stays in the fields and where the protagonist is still conspicuous in the old stone mill. For a product to be protected geographical indication and basic processing of the beer in the small hamlet of La Petrognola, in fact, this grain must be grown on suitable land, poor in nutrients, in a steep high between 300 and 1000 meters above the sea and in the normal practice in the area, ie without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. Given the high hardiness of the plant, also spelled cultivated with this traditional technique, is actually an organic product.
"Living in this beautiful and poetic cradle of farro, - says the manufacturer of craft beer, Roberto Giannarelli - I thought of using corn to make this relish the taste of even the most discerning palates and hope to convey the most of what I feel every time I produce my drink." In fact, his was the classic dream in a drawer, which little by little was able to be realized.
Everything began in 2002 when the beer in question is made in a large pot of a former stable and consumption is restricted to lucky friends Giannarelli, expert lovers of beer that in his life is still dedicated transport until the weekend of freedom his great passion. After just a few months after the birth of the first drink craft, comes the recognition of the prestigious Salone del Gusto in Turin. Production starts to become more systematic, though limited to a maximum of 8 thousand bottles a year, but still reduced the use of indigenous products.
Following then, other successes. His beer spelled of Garfagnana, in fact, won the first prize in 2006, and the second in 2007, the contest dell'Unionbirrai "Best Craft Beer of the Year" in category "Beers with other cereals”.
From rags to riches, is a case of, for what began as a small brewery in the country and has become a name in the brewing craft production, which now produces two types spelled the black and ambrata.
Although the brewery Petrognola participates in the European Festival of Taste, December 4 to 7 in Istria.
