In Milan, Villa St. Carlo Borromeo
Near Milan, you can meet a charming home nestled in over 11 acres of park. It’s Villa St Carlo Borromeo, built back in the fourteenth century, in Senago, in the province of Milan. We are, precisely, in the municipality that was inhabited by the Celts, as evidenced by the inscription outside the walled villa, dated 1814, which explains the name with “aer sanus or sanus ager” where “ager” is a typical Celtic suffix. The residence, in fact, is situated on an artificial hill, under a settlement by the Celtic population of VIII century BC C.. Later, the Romans were to use it as their stronghold and finally the Visconti, during the fourteenth century, they built the building closed on four sides.
To know its heyday, it must await the arrival of Federico Borromeo, in the early '600, who welcomed his best figures of the Villa. Almost a century after Gilberto Borromeo completed the furnishing of this sumptuous home, adding furniture, chandeliers and beautiful works of art. During the last century, however, the Nazi occupation has caused serious damage, while, immediately after the withdrawal of German troops were placed on one of the inputs, namely on the facade of the Museum Ambrose, two stars of David.
During its seven centuries of history, then, Villa St. Carlo Borromeo registered and hosted several events, including its beautiful rooms, many prominent figures, by their actions, have contributed to 'do' our Italy. Just think, among others, Leonardo da Vinci, Alessandro Manzoni, Benedetto Croce, Giovanni Verga and Luigi Pirandello, but also foreign famous as Denis Diderot and Stendhal.
Visiting this old house, you come across millennia of history, art and culture, to savor not only the main building, with its artistic ceiling, but also three museums in the Park, to St. Ambrose, St. Eustorgio and St. Protasio, and the Ice Museum, a cathedral semi-underground.
In particular, we point out that until September 12 in the Museum of the Villa you can watch a show dedicated to Russia and its suggestions, the protagonist of our country WALKING IN THE WORLD.
